Nothing piqued the Doctor's curiosity more than odd creatures. Fungi with faces, and feet, were definitely up there on the odd end of things. Based on network posts, they were in the forest. Normally, she would take the TARDIS to the forest, but she didn't want to disturb River. Instead, she went on foot. Thankfully, the TARDIS' current location was only a few metres from the forest, so it wasn't too much of a trek. Nothing she wasn't used to by now, anyway. She stepped carefully into the forest. It was one forest she couldn't trust, as it seemed to change on its own accord. She stepped carefully over bent, gnarled roots and ducked down to peer under thick foliage. Nothing so far. She fished her sonic screwdriver out of her pocket and scanned the foliage, the ground, the nearest trees. Nothing out of the ordinary. Well, nothing out of the ordinary for Vallo. She picked up a pinch of dirt from the ground and popped it in her mouth. She tilted her head as she tasted it. This didn't tell her much either, except that Vallo had a new bookstore. She stood back up and ventured deeper into the forest. A faint rustling noise caught her attention and she turned toward it, sonic humming. "Whose there?" Nothing answered her so she slowly walked toward the sound. "Is that you, little mushrooms?" "Negative." The tinny, robotic voice was instantly familiar and a smile broke across the Doctor's face. "K-9!" She exclaimed and the robotic dog slowly trundled out from the bushes. "Affirmative, Mistress." "Ah, you still recognise me." She knelt down to stroke the cold metal of the dog's head while his small satellite ears oscillated back and forth. "Affirmative, Mistress." The Doctor's smile only widened into a grin. "How did you get here? Shouldn't you be with me? The other me. With the tall hair and the suits?" "Affirmative. We were at the school." "With Sarah Jane," she replied softly. Oh how long it had been since she'd seen Sarah Jane. Back then, seeing her had been a blast from the past, now—now seeing her was a lot less likely. She couldn't rule it out entirely. River was supposed to be—so there was a possibility that Sarah Jane could as well. That didn't stop her hearts from sinking at the thought of her. Few people had been with the Doctor as long as she had. Bushes rustled again, drawing the Doctor out of her thoughts. She and K-9 both followed the sound. The Doctor kept close to the ground and pocketed her sonic. She thought it might scare off any of the mushrooms that might be lurking about. Finally, one waddled out from under the bush and made an inscrutable noise at the Doctor. The Doctor looked to K-9 at her feet on her right side. "What do you make of it, boy?" There was a quiet whirring noise while the robot dog scanned and analyzed the fungus. "Unidentifiable," the dog stated in its monotoned voice. "You're telling me," the Doctor replied and reached a hand out slowly toward the mushroom. The mushroom looked cranky and the small tusks that protruded from his lower jaw were fascinating. A fungus with bones, muscles, perhaps a central nervous system not unlike a human's. "You look a bit like a shiitake mushroom, don't you?" The mushroom repeated its noise at her, although it sounded slightly more annoyed now. "Oh, not very happy with me, are you?" Rustling announced the arrival of several more mushrooms, some much, much bigger than others and from the trees swooped down winged mushrooms. They all seemed to be encroaching on the Doctor and K-9 and none of them seemed to be particularly happy. "K-9, I think it's time to run." "Affirmative." |
